Fairmont, MN fears peace, can't quite explain why
I was at turns baffled and disturbed by this story on NPR's Weekend Edition. When this mostly white, mostly Republican enclave passed a city council resolution supporting the creation of a US Department of Peace, the town lost its collective mind and demanded that the council overturn the resolution, which they did. The story featured audio of concerned citizens attempting to articulate their rationale for opposition, which mainly consisted of a lot of semi-coherent babble about communists and fuzzy children (or something like that), with one man emphatically stating that peace is "wrong." I'm sure Jesus (see also Peace, Prince of) would be shocked to hear that.
Thinking like this is why W is president, and we are currently mired in a pathetic no-win situation in Iraq (and Afghanistan hasn't been going so well lately, either).
